JCB-WP80 Review: The 3-Inch Petrol Water Pump That's the Value Pick of the Range

What Is the JCB-WP80?

The WP80 is the middle child of JCB's three-pump line-up and, on paper, the one most buyers should end up with. It shares its 224cc single-cylinder OHV air-cooled engine, recoil start, cast iron impeller, aluminium housing and 32mm tubular steel open frame with the smaller WP50 — the difference is entirely in the plumbing. Three-inch (80mm) suction and discharge ports transform the volume this platform can move, taking it from garden-scale water transfer into genuine contractor dewatering territory.

Performance: Serious Volume for the Money

The numbers tell the story. At 966 litres per minute the WP80 shifts nearly 58,000 litres an hour at zero head — more than double the WP50's output from exactly the same engine. That is the payoff of the 3-inch ports: less restriction, vastly more volume. In practical terms, this is the pump for emptying flooded excavations, draining large ponds and lagoons, irrigation from watercourses, and keeping a working site dry when the water table has other ideas. JCB's own guidance for dewatering is sound: estimate your inflow rate first and pick a pump that comfortably exceeds it, and at 58 m³/h the WP80 exceeds most.

The trade-off against its smaller sibling is head: 28m total against the WP50's 32m. That is still ample for typical dewatering (remember flow falls as head rises, and suction lift tops out at 7m as with any surface pump), but if your job is specifically pushing modest volumes a long way uphill, the WP50 is arguably the better tool. What the WP80 cannot do is handle dirty water - the 5mm solids ceiling is identical to the WP50's, and shared with no wider internal passages to forgive a stray stone. Storm debris, gravelly excavation water and anything you would describe as sludge belongs to the WP80T trash pump. A suction strainer is essential insurance either way.

Build, Portability and Living With It

Remarkably, the step up to 3-inch plumbing costs only 2kg: at 27kg net, JCB fairly describes the WP80 as lightweight for its class, and the tubular steel frame doubles as carry handles. The component story is the same reassuring one as across the range - cast iron impeller, aluminium housing, heavy-duty nylon braided recoil cord - and the 3.6-litre tank gives around two hours of unattended running with a low-oil warning system standing guard.

The ownership caveats are also familiar. The sump ships empty and needs 600ml of SAE30 or 15W40 before the first pull — skipping this is both an engine-killer and a warranty-voider. JCB recommends E10 (95 RON) with a stabiliser, used within 30 days and never left in the tank beyond four weeks, since E10 attracts moisture. And at 104dB, ear protection is mandatory kit, not a suggestion.

Who Should Buy the JCB-WP80?

Buy it if you regularly move large volumes of clean-to-mildly-contaminated water: site dewatering, agricultural irrigation, flood prevention, draining large ponds. It is the best pound-per-litre buy in JCB's range by a distance. Skip it if your water carries debris over 5mm — spend the extra £45 on the WP80T trash pump and stop worrying about the impeller — or if you mainly need to lift water uphill rather than move volume, where the WP50 quietly wins.
