JCB 18V 5-Piece Pro Kit Review (JCB-18PKIT-8): Is £549.99 Good Value in 2026?

Five-piece cordless kits are where power tool brands do their most creative arithmetic. Bundle enough tools together, quote a headline saving against inflated individual RRPs, and almost any kit can be made to look like a bargain. So the useful question is never "how much is it discounted?" — it is "what would this cost me to assemble tool by tool, and is each tool one I would actually have chosen?"

The JCB-18PKIT-8 survives that test better than most, largely because JCB has not padded it out with the usual filler. There is no torch, no radio, no fourth-tier oscillating multi-tool. Every item in the bag is a mainstream trade tool, all five are brushless, and the battery allocation — two compact 2.0Ah cells for the driver and grinder, two 5.0Ah cells for the saws - is the split an experienced user would actually pick.

JCB describes the bundle as "the ultimate cordless power solution for trade professionals, offering uncompromising performance, runtime, and versatility" — marketing language, obviously, but the inventory does back the versatility half of that claim. Drilling, driving, ripping sheet material, curved cuts and metal cutting or grinding are the five jobs a general builder or fit-out joiner does most, and there is a dedicated brushless tool here for each of them.

Is the maths actually good?

Here is the honest comparison. JCB sells the same combi drill as a standalone kit with 2× 5.0Ah batteries and a 4.5A charger for £189.99 (JCB-18PCD-160-5). Take that as your baseline platform entry: one tool, two big batteries, one charger.

Strip out the drill kit''s £189.99 and you are paying roughly £360 for a brushless 230Nm impact driver, a 185mm circular saw with two blades, a brushless jigsaw, a 115mm grinder, two extra batteries and a bag. Buy those five items separately from any mainstream trade brand and you will not see change from £600. The bundle logic here is real rather than manufactured — the £110-per-tool figure is the lowest of the three JCB routes into the platform, and it is unusual for the biggest kit to also be the best value per unit rather than the one padded with low-spec extras.

The tools, individually

Combi drill (JCB-18PCD-160) — the strongest item in the bag

We have used this drill before and it remains the reason to take the JCB Pro range seriously. 160Nm is genuinely competitive with the flagship 18V combis from the big three, the 13mm ROHM all-metal chuck is a component you would expect at a higher price point, and the 25+3 setting collar gives sensible granularity for anything from cabinet screws to 10mm masonry. The anti-kickback control matters more than it sounds: a 160Nm drill that binds in a joist will otherwise take your wrist with it. The auxiliary handle is included, which not every bundle bothers with.

Impact driver (JCB-18PID-230) — compact where it counts

230Nm from a compact body, with four electronic modes rather than the three most rivals offer. In our experience with this driver, the lowest mode is genuinely usable for small fixings without cam-out, which is the practical test of whether the electronics are any good. Dust-sealed PCB and an LED ring round it out. For decking, stud work and repetitive fit-out fixing, this is the tool you will reach for most.

Circular saw (JCB-18PCS-185) — specification-strong, untested by us

We have not put this saw through a day of sheet ripping ourselves, so treat this as a read of the specification rather than a field verdict. What the numbers say is encouraging: 185mm blade, 65mm depth at 0°, 5,500rpm, brushless, a cast aluminium base rather than pressed steel, a 50° bevel and an electric brake. Two blades are supplied — 24T for wood and 40T for multi-material — which removes the usual hidden £30 first purchase. The one caveat is runtime: any 185mm cordless saw will drain a 5.0Ah pack quickly in continuous ripping, which is exactly why the kit''s two large batteries and dual charger matter.

Jigsaw (JCB-18PJS-DG) — better specified than most kit-filler jigsaws

Bundle jigsaws are usually where corners get cut. This one is brushless, has a 26mm stroke, four-stage pendulum action, six speeds, tool-free blade change, a dust blower and a cast aluminium baseplate. That is a mid-to-upper specification, not a token inclusion. 135mm in wood covers worktop and joist work comfortably.

Angle grinder (JCB-18PAG-115) — the four-speed control is unusual

115mm at 9,000rpm is standard; four-speed digital control is not, and it is genuinely useful for wire brushing and paint removal where full speed burns the surface. Paddle switch, anti-vibration housing and a tool-free 2-in-1 guard are the right specification choices. Bear in mind grinders are the heaviest current draw of the five — pair it with a 5.0Ah pack for anything more than short cuts.

Batteries, charging and the warranty

The battery allocation is the quietly clever part. Four packs across five tools means you can leave a 2.0Ah in the driver and a 5.0Ah in the saw permanently and still have a spare pair on the dual charger. Two-bay 4.5A charging matters when a 5.0Ah pack is your bottleneck on a circular saw day; single-bay chargers are how bundles secretly ration your productivity.

Warranty is where JCB puts clear water between itself and the supermarket-tier brands. JCB states: "With a 3-year warranty on tools, and 2-year warranty on batteries (subject to terms), you can be confident your JCB Pro Tool Kit will last for jobs to come." Three years on tools is a year longer than the standard unregistered cover from most rivals, and the batteries and charger are cross-compatible with the wider JCB 18V Cordless and 18V Professional ranges — so the platform you are buying into is not a dead end.

Pros and cons

Who should buy it — and who shouldn''t

Buy it if you are starting a cordless platform from zero and expect to need all five tool types: renovation work, first-fix carpentry, garden room and decking builds, landscaping construction, or a well-equipped serious home workshop. The £110-per-tool figure is very hard to beat at this specification level, and the four-battery allocation means you will not spend your first year buying packs.

Skip it if you already own DeWalt XR or Makita LXT batteries — the value case collapses the moment you own a rival platform, because you are paying for four batteries and a charger you do not need. Skip it too if your honest tool list is "drill, driver, occasional cutting": the £239.99 twinpack gets you the two tools you will use 90% of the time, and you can add the grinder or saw later on the same batteries.
