JCB-WP50 Review: The 2-Inch Petrol Water Pump That Punches Above Its Ports

What Is the JCB-WP50?

The WP50 is the entry point to JCB's three-model petrol water pump range, sold through jcb-tools.co.uk (JCB Tools equipment is produced under licence by Genpower Ltd of Pembroke Dock - see all our JCB Tools reviews). It is a classic open-frame surface pump: a 224cc single-cylinder OHV air-cooled 4-stroke engine bolted to an aluminium pump housing with a cast iron impeller, the whole assembly caged in 32mm tubular steel that doubles as carry handles and crash protection.

At £199.99 including VAT it undercuts the 3-inch WP80 by only £15, which raises an obvious question we will come back to: who should buy the small one?

Performance: The Uphill Specialist

The headline figure, 466 litres per minute, or nearly 28,000 litres per hour -  is a lot of water for a 2-inch pump. To put it in domestic terms, that would theoretically empty a typical 10,000-litre garden pond in under half an hour at zero head. For irrigation transfer, filling bowsers or clearing a flooded garage, it is more than enough.

The more interesting number is the 32-metre total head, which is actually the best in the entire JCB range - the bigger WP80 manages 28m and the WP80T trash pump 25m. Physics explains it: with the same 7.5hp pushing through smaller ports, you trade volume for pressure. If your job involves lifting water a significant vertical distance - hillside irrigation from a stream, feeding an elevated tank - the WP50 is genuinely the right tool, not the compromise option. As with all centrifugal pumps, remember the quoted flow is at zero head and falls away as lift increases; the 7m suction lift ceiling applies to all surface pumps.

The 5mm solids limit is the hard boundary. Pond water, rainwater and lightly silty run-off are fine; anything with gravel, twigs or storm debris risks impeller damage and needs the WP80T trash pump instead. JCB's own guidance is to always fit a strainer to the suction line, and we would call that non-negotiable.

Build, Portability and Living With It

At 25kg net the WP50 is the lightest pump in the range and realistically a one-person lift for short distances, with the 32mm tubular steel frame serving as handles. The spec sheet is reassuring where it matters: cast iron impeller (more durable and chemical-resistant than the plastic impellers found on budget pumps), aluminium housing to keep weight down, and a heavy-duty nylon braided recoil cord - historically the first thing to fail on cheap recoil-start machines.

The 3.6-litre tank gives roughly two hours of continuous pumping, sensible for a machine likely to run unattended. A low-oil warning system protects the engine, but note the pump ships dry: you must add 600ml of SAE30 or 15W40 before first start, and skipping this voids the otherwise generous 3-year warranty. JCB's E10 fuel guidance also deserves attention - use fresh petrol within 30 days, add a stabiliser, and never leave E10 sitting in the tank beyond four weeks, as it attracts moisture and damages fuel systems. Finally, at 104dB this is a genuinely loud machine; ear defenders are essential.

Pros and Cons

Buy it if you need a portable clean water pump for irrigation, water transfer, pond work or occasional light flood duty  and especially if your application involves pushing water uphill, where its 32m head beats both bigger siblings. Skip it if you regularly move large volumes (the WP80's 966 L/min costs just £15 more) or if your water carries debris, in which case the WP80T trash pump is the only sensible choice in the range.
