1. Autumn Planting (October–December) – The traditional and most reliable window

Most experienced growers recommend planting garlic in autumn. This period provides essential cold exposure (vernalisation), which triggers each clove to develop into a full bulb. Autumn planting also promotes strong root development before spring growth.

Ideal months: Late October to mid-December

Best for: Hardneck and softneck varieties suited to UK winters

I always aim to get my cloves in the ground around Bonfire Night. The soil still holds warmth and roots establish nicely before Christmas.

Separate cloves carefully and plant pointy-end up, 2–3 cm deep and 15 cm apart. Using a dibber helps keep rows neat and eases weeding later.

Mulch for Winter Protection

In colder areas, mulch with straw, compost, or leaf mould to stabilise soil temperature and prevent frost heave.

Feed in Spring

Apply a nitrogen-rich feed (fish, blood & bone, or seaweed-based fertiliser) as shoots emerge. Stop feeding once bulbs begin to swell in early summer.
