JCB Pro 18V Compact Combi Drill Review (JCB-18PCD-75-5): The £178 Kit That Undercuts Everyone

Every cordless platform needs its gateway tool, and for JCB's Pro 18V system it's this: the JCB-18PCD-75 compact combi drill, sold body-only at £67.99 or - the version reviewed here - as the 18PCD-75-5 kit with two Pro 5.0Ah lithium-ion packs and the 4.5A fast charger for £178.00. It's the drill in PKIT-1, PKIT-2, PKIT-4, PKIT-6 and PKIT-7, and the tool most buyers will use to decide whether the whole "benchmarked to be the best" pitch holds up.

Specifications

The torque story: 75Nm in a compact body

Context matters here. "Compact" drills across the market typically trade torque for size; many popular compacts sit in the 50–65Nm band. Pitching 75Nm in a lightweight frame puts the JCB at the muscular end of the compact class: enough for joist drilling, large spade bits, coach screws into sleepers and kitchen-fit work, while staying short enough for between-studs and overhead use - exactly the electrician/plumber/fitter audience JCB names. The 23+3 clutch gives fine screwdriving control, the two-speed box covers fast small-bit work, and the hammer function handles masonry fixings (though for all-day drilling into engineering brick or concrete, an SDS is still the right tool - no combi replaces one).

Build details that signal trade intent

Three specification choices separate trade tools from DIY-grade kit, and this drill makes all three: a metal 13mm keyless chuck (plastic chucks are the classic budget tell - bit slip and short lives), dust-sealed electronics (site dust kills circuit boards; sealing them is why tools survive plasterboard weeks), and a brushless motor, which buys longer runtime per charge, more torque per kilo and a motor that outlasts brushed equivalents. Add the LED worklight and belt clip and the feature set reads like a tool designed by people who watched tradespeople work rather than a costed-down spec sheet.

The £178 arithmetic - where this kit wins

Here's the calculation that earns the rating. The bare tool is £67.99, so the kit prices two 5.0Ah packs and a 4.5A fast charger at about £110 combined - a fair price for two big packs and a charger. Against the market: entry into DeWalt, Makita or Bosch's 18V platforms at trade spec routinely costs similar money for the bare tool plus one smaller battery. And within JCB's own range, this kit is the quiet anomaly we flagged in the buying guide: it costs exactly the same as the two-tool PKIT-1 (£178.00) but carries 2.5 times the battery capacity (10Ah against 4Ah). If you're building a platform one bare tool at a time, this is the smarter foundation, because big packs power everything you add later (the grinder, circular saw and impact wrenches genuinely need them).

What to weigh against it

Honest caveats. If your day is 90% big-bit drilling in hard materials, the 160Nm flagship drill (in PKIT-3) is the better match - 75Nm is strong for a compact, not a substitute for the range-topper. The Pro 18V ecosystem is young: bare-tool breadth doesn't yet rival DeWalt's hundreds of SKUs, and that matters if you expect one platform to run your whole van. Retailer listings also show minor spec-figure variations (no-load rpm is quoted slightly differently across stockists), which is cosmetic but worth knowing if you're comparing spec sheets closely. None of this dents the core proposition at this price.
