Standby diesel generators are designed to start automatically when mains power fails, restoring power to a property in 5–15 seconds. They're usually paired with an automatic transfer switch (ATS) wired into the consumer unit.
Diesel fuel keeps better than petrol — typically 12 months in a sealed tank with a stabiliser — making diesel the natural choice for emergency backup that might sit unused for months at a time.
