James Barnes Returns to Dobbies Garden Centres as Advisor

Dobbies Garden Centres has announced the appointment of former chairman and chief executive James Barnes as an advisor to the business.

Who is James Barnes?

Barnes, a member of Dobbies’ founding family, took over the business from his father and led it through a period of significant expansion. Under his leadership, Dobbies was listed on AIM and grew to 24 garden centres before becoming the subject of a fierce takeover battle between Tesco and Sir Tom Hunter. Tesco secured ownership in 2008, and Barnes remained with the company until 2013.

Since 2018, Barnes has served as Chairman of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), bringing his extensive industry experience to the wider horticultural sector.

Dobbies CEO David Robinson welcomed Barnes’ return in an advisory capacity, emphasising his strategic insight and deep understanding of the business.
