Blanchford Building Supplies Closes After 87 Years, Marking a Significant Loss for the Community

In a surprising development, Blanchford & Co Ltd, widely known as Blanchford Building Supplies, has ceased operations after 87 years of service. The family-run business, which operated four branches across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, officially closed its doors on February 14, 2025.

Established in 1938 by brothers Fred, Cecil, and Ronald Blanchford, the company began its journey on Queens Street in central Oxford. Over the decades, it expanded to locations in Headington, Princes Risborough, Wallingford, and Bicester, offering a wide range of home improvement products and services, including full-scale bathrooms, kitchens, plumbing, heating, and lighting solutions.

The sudden closure has left approximately 80 employees without jobs and has elicited heartfelt responses from the community. Customers have expressed their sadness, with one noting, “Our town is losing a real asset.” Another shared, “Huge part of my childhood was going there with my dad to buy supplies.”

Financial records leading up to the closure indicate that for the year ending December 31, 2023, Blanchford Building Supplies reported a turnover of just under £15.4 million but faced an operating loss before tax of nearly £700,000. This downturn was attributed to “fierce competition from both national and local rivals.”

The closure of Blanchford Building Supplies is part of a broader trend affecting the retail sector. The British Retail Consortium has projected that the Treasury’s hike to employer National Insurance Contributions will cost the retail sector £2.3 billion. Additionally, the Centre for Retail Research warns that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year, with approximately 202,000 jobs at risk.
