Best Guinea Pig Runs UK (2026): 15 Runs and 5 Weatherproof Covers Compared
Most guinea pig runs sold online are smaller than UK welfare charities recommend. Adam Peaty compares 15 runs and 5 weatherproof covers against RSPCA and Wood Green space guidance, so you can see which ones are big enough, which are only for top-up play time, and what to do with your piggies this winter.
Key takeaways
- Before looking at any product, it's worth knowing the numbers, because many runs are sold with a "guinea pig" label but are far smaller than UK welfare charities recommend.
- This is the biggest run on our list by footprint and height combined, and the only one tall enough to be useful for rabbits as well as guinea pigs.
- Triangle or "apex" runs are popular because they're cheap and fit neatly on a patio.
- From November to March, temperatures in most of the UK sit below the 15°C the RSPCA gives as the point where guinea pigs can get chilled.
- A good cover cuts wind, keeps rain off and helps hold in warmth.

Quick Answer: what is the best guinea pig run in the UK?
For two guinea pigs, the PawHut 220 x 103 x 103cm run with cover and the Cozy Pet 2.15m galvanised steel run are the only runs on our list that meet Wood Green's recommended 6ft x 4ft (182 x 122cm) run size. If you'd rather have wood, the Bunny Business 6ft run (180 x 100cm) is the closest wooden option. Smaller apex and triangle runs are best kept for short, supervised extra time outdoors, not as the main exercise space.
For winter, the RSPCA says guinea pigs can get chilled below 15°C, so in most of the UK the best move from November is to bring them indoors and use an indoor pen such as the SONGMICS or PawHut 24-panel. Weatherproof covers are mainly for rabbit hutches and runs, and for the spring and autumn months either side of winter.

How big should a guinea pig run be?
Before looking at any product, it's worth knowing the numbers, because many runs are sold with a "guinea pig" label but are far smaller than UK welfare charities recommend.
- Living space: The Royal Veterinary College's exotics service gives the RSPCA's minimum as 120 x 60 x 45cm of floor space for a pair, and advises giving as much extra space as you can.
- Run or exercise area: Wood Green, The Animals Charity, recommends a run of 6ft long x 4ft wide x 18in high (182 x 122 x 46cm) for a pair. It also says outdoor runs should have a wooden frame and a lid that hinges or comes off.
- Rabbits need far more: The RWAF's long-running campaign is called "A Hutch Is Not Enough". It recommends at least 3m x 2m x 1m high of permanent space for rabbits. No run on this list reaches that on its own, so rabbit owners should join several units together or attach one to a larger enclosure.
Worked out as area, Wood Green's run size comes to about 2.2m². We used that as our benchmark. In the picks below, a run is marked as "meets guidance" if it reaches about 2.2m², and as a "top-up run" if it is well under it.
Expert view: "Indoor housing during inclement weather is essential." That's the Royal Veterinary College's exotics service in its guinea pig care guide. It matters a great deal this time of year: no run, however well covered, takes the place of moving your guinea pigs somewhere warm when the weather turns.
Best outdoor guinea pig runs
1. PawHut Rabbit Run and Guinea Pig Cage with Cover (220 x 103 x 103cm) – Best Overall
This is the biggest run on our list by footprint and height combined, and the only one tall enough to be useful for rabbits as well as guinea pigs. At 2.27m² it meets Wood Green's 6ft x 4ft guidance for a pair of guinea pigs. The steel frame folds flat, so you can store it in a shed over winter, which is when you'll want it out of the way. The included roof cover gives shade in summer and keeps rain off.
- Size: 220 x 103 x 103cm (2.27m²)
- Material: Steel frame and mesh, with a fabric roof cover
- Access: Two large doors
Pros: Meets guinea pig space guidance; 103cm height suits rabbits; collapses for storage.
Cons: No built-in floor or shelter. Add a hide for every guinea pig, and make sure the frame sits flat on the ground so nothing can dig under it.
2. Cozy Pet Galvanised Steel Rabbit Run 2.15m with Sun Shade – Most Floor Space
Cozy Pet lists this run at about 2.46m² of exercise space. That's the most floor area here, and more than Wood Green's guidance. The galvanised wire resists rust, and five access doors (including one in the flat roof) make it easy to put down fresh hay or scoop up a reluctant piggy. A sunshade is included.
- Size: 215 x 115 x 61cm (approx. 2.46m²)
- Material: Galvanised steel wire
- Access: Five doors, including one in the roof
Pros: The most floor space; rust-resistant; lots of access points.
Cons: At 61cm it is too low for most rabbits to stand up fully. The sunshade covers only part of the roof, so add a solid hide too.
3. BUNNY BUSINESS 6ft Guinea Pig and Rabbit Run – Best Wooden Run
If you want a wooden run that fits Wood Green's advice on frames and lids, this is the closest option. It's 180cm long, so it matches the recommended 6ft length, although at 100cm wide it is about 22cm narrower than the guidance. The roof opens on both sides, which makes feeding and cleaning easy. The timber is treated with a pet-friendly red cedar preservative.
- Size: 180 x 100 x 48cm (1.80m²)
- Material: Treated timber and wire mesh
- Access: Opening roof panels on both sides
Pros: The right length; a wooden frame with a lid; a 48cm height that suits guinea pigs.
Cons: A little short of the full 4ft width; too low for rabbits to stand up.
4. PawHut 6ft Wooden Rabbit Run with Openable Roof
This is almost the same size as the Bunny Business 6ft run, at 181 x 100 x 48cm. It's made from fir wood with a weatherproof painted finish, and it's worth comparing the two on price on the day you buy. A large door makes cleaning and handling easier. PawHut says it suits 2–4 rabbits. Given the RWAF's guidance, we'd treat it as a guinea pig run, or as an extra exercise space for rabbits.
- Size: 181 x 100 x 48cm (1.81m²)
- Material: Fir wood with a painted finish and wire mesh
Pros: A good-sized wooden run that blends into the garden.
Cons: PawHut's claim that it suits 2–4 rabbits is well short of RWAF guidance.
5. CADOCA Outdoor Metal Rabbit Run 180 x 75 x 75cm with Roof
This metal run comes with a black roof cover and lockable doors. It works outdoors or indoors, so it's useful for the switch to winter quarters. At 1.35m² it is below the guidance for a pair, but it would work well as a second area linked to another run.
- Size: 180 x 75 x 75cm (1.35m²)
- Material: Metal frame with a roof cover
Pros: Use it inside or out; lockable doors; taller than most guinea pig runs.
Cons: Narrow; you'll need to protect the floor if you use it indoors.
6. KCT 4x4 Wooden Pet Run (122 x 122 x 61cm)
A square, lightweight wooden run. A third of it has a solid wooden roof for shade and shelter, and the rest has roof panels that fold halfway or open fully. Its main strength is how easily you can move it around the lawn, which stops one patch of grass being worn bare.
- Size: 122 x 122 x 61cm (1.49m²)
- Material: Wood and mesh, with a partly solid roof
Pros: Built-in shade; light enough to move each day; flexible roof access.
Cons: About two-thirds of the recommended run area for a pair.
7. Bunny Business 4ft Foldable, Partly Sheltered Run
This run is the same size as the KCT 4x4, but it folds away in seconds. That's useful if your guinea pigs come indoors for winter and you're short of shed space. A sheltered section keeps off sun and rain.
- Size: 122 x 122 x 61cm (1.49m²)
- Material: Treated timber (red cedar preservative)
Pros: Folds flat; has a sheltered area.
Cons: Below the recommended area for a pair.
Compact apex and triangle runs (top-up time only)
Triangle or "apex" runs are popular because they're cheap and fit neatly on a patio. At around 0.6m², though, they're about a quarter of the run area Wood Green recommends. We'd only use them for short, supervised sessions on the lawn, on top of a proper-sized setup.
8. Bunny Business Apex Run with Enclosure (4ft)
This run is made from black powder-coated wire and has a sheltered section with its own floor. It takes about 10 minutes to put together. Bunny Business also sells a matching cover (pick #16 below).
- Size: 118 x 50 x 45cm (0.59m²)
9. KCT Wooden Apex Triangle Run
A wooden version of the apex design, with a covered shelter section and two removable panel doors for cleaning.
- Size: 117 x 50 x 45.5cm (0.59m²)
10. Oypla Wooden Triangle Hutch Run
This fir-wood triangle has a covered sleeping area and an open run, and it's designed to tuck into a corner. The listing we worked from didn't give dimensions, so check the size on Amazon. Like the other apex designs, use it for extra time outside rather than as a main home.
Best indoor guinea pig runs and pens (for winter)
From November to March, temperatures in most of the UK sit below the 15°C the RSPCA gives as the point where guinea pigs can get chilled. That makes an indoor pen the most useful thing you can buy this month. A modular pen also lets you go beyond the space a typical pet-shop cage gives you.
11. PawHut 24-Panel Customisable Playpen – Best Indoor Pen
The kit includes 24 wire panels, 2 door panels, 5 resin panels and a ladder panel, plus cable ties and a mallet. The suggested layout is 105 x 105cm, but you can rearrange the panels into a long rectangle for more running room, or add a second set.
- Default size: 105 x 105 x 70cm (configurable)
Pros: The most adaptable pen here; tall enough that guinea pigs can't climb out.
Cons: No floor, so put a waterproof mat or vinyl underneath.
12. SONGMICS Small Animal Playpen with Waterproof Mat
The selling point here is the water-resistant Oxford fabric base, which has raised edges to keep hay and wee off your carpet. There's also a mesh roof you can add and doors in the top. At 0.77m² it's small on its own, so think of it as a floor-friendly base you can add to.
- Size: 123 x 63 x 41.5cm
13. EUGAD DIY Rabbit and Guinea Pig Playpen
A budget modular pen. Panels in two sizes clip together with connectors, and the steel frame has non-slip pads. You can add more sets to make the pen bigger or taller.
- Size: 142 x 71 x 53cm
14. TRIXIE Indoor Free-Range Enclosure
Made from untreated wood and metal, with four 60 x 30cm sections that plug together, plus an optional extra section for guinea pigs that like to jump. It's too small to use alone, so use it to extend another pen.
15. Summer Island 2-Tier Hutch Run with Wheels – Not recommended for guinea pigs
We've included this because it appears in lots of "guinea pig run" searches. We wouldn't recommend it for guinea pigs. The listing describes wire grid floors, and guinea pigs have sensitive feet that do best on solid flooring with bedding. They also aren't natural climbers, so a two-storey design gives them little usable space. The run section is about 5 sq ft (0.46m²), a fraction of the guidance. If you already own one, cover the grid floors with solid boards and bedding.
Best weatherproof run and hutch covers
A good cover cuts wind, keeps rain off and helps hold in warmth. Blue Cross warns that you shouldn't cover a guinea pig home completely, because that stops air flowing through. Pick covers with roll-up panels, clear windows or vents, and leave at least part of the front open during the day.
16. BUNNY BUSINESS 4ft Apex Run Cover
Made to fit Bunny Business apex runs (118 x 50 x 45cm), so it's the natural partner for pick #8. It's breathable and protects against wind and rain. You get the cover only, not the run.
17. BUNNY BUSINESS Universal 48-Inch Hutch Cover – Best Hutch Cover
This insulating, water-repellent cover wraps fully around any hutch with a roof of 48 x 20in or smaller. A clear front panel folds down and rolls up for feeding, which lets you control how much of the front stays open.
18. Ieron 48-Inch Windproof, Waterproof, Thermal Hutch Cover
Sized at 122 x 50 x 105cm, with adjustable edges that hold it firmly on the hutch. It's sold as windproof, waterproof and thermal. That's the combination you want for a rabbit hutch in a UK winter.
19. DAZZLEEX Triangle Hutch Cover with Zips
Made from heavy-duty 210D Oxford fabric, with zips and an adjustable drawstring hem so it stays on in high winds. It comes in 147cm and 180cm lengths and includes a storage bag.
20. CARMOTTER Triangle Hutch Cover – Best for Airflow
This cover stands out for its 15-section airflow system and a clear window. That makes it the easiest cover here to use in line with Blue Cross's advice about airflow. It comes in the same 147cm and 180cm sizes as the DAZZLEEX.
Adam's expert tips for using a guinea pig run
- Measure the floor area, not the box. Multiply length by width and compare it with about 2.2m² for a pair (Wood Green's 6ft x 4ft). The ratings printed on listings, like "suits 2–4 rabbits", aren't a reliable guide.
- Give every guinea pig its own hide. Guinea pigs are prey animals and feel safer when they can hide. Put one hide in for each animal so nobody gets pushed out.
- Shade at least half the run. Blue Cross says temperatures above 26°C can cause fatal heatstroke. Place the run so the shade still covers part of it as the sun moves round in the afternoon.
- Check for gaps under the frame. Lawns are rarely flat. Look for gaps under the frame where a fox could dig or a guinea pig could squeeze out, and add pegs or a mesh skirt if you need to.
- Keep the lid on. Cats, foxes and birds of prey can all reach an open-topped run. Wood Green specifically recommends a hinged or removable lid on outdoor runs.
- Move the run every day. This gives your guinea pigs fresh grass to graze and saves your lawn. A run left in one spot will leave a yellow patch within days. Our winter lawn care guide covers how to repair worn patches.
- Remember a run is for daytime. Bring guinea pigs back to their secure, sheltered home at night, and indoors when the weather is cold or wet.
- Don't keep rabbits and guinea pigs together. The RVC notes that rabbits often bully guinea pigs, and the two have different diets.
Can guinea pigs stay outside in winter in the UK?
For most UK households, no. The RSPCA advises protecting guinea pigs from draughts and extremes of temperature. It warns that above 26°C they risk heatstroke, and below 15°C they can become chilled. UK daytime temperatures in winter are usually well under 15°C, so the safest option is to bring guinea pigs into a quiet, draught-free room. Use one of the indoor pens above so they can still exercise every day.
If moving them indoors isn't possible, a shed or garage conversion is better than a hutch left out in the garden. Insulate it, never run a car or petrol machinery in the same space, and keep extra bedding and a cover for cold snaps. Rabbits cope with cold better than guinea pigs, which is why most of the covers on this list are made for rabbit hutches.
Buying checklist
- Floor area: about 2.2m² or more for a pair of guinea pigs
- Height: 45cm or more for guinea pigs; about 1m for rabbits (RWAF)
- Lid: solid or mesh, hinged or removable, never open-topped outdoors
- Shelter: a built-in shaded area, or room for a hide per animal
- Mesh: strong and close enough to keep predators out
- Storage: folding or flat-pack designs make winter much easier
- Flooring: avoid wire grid floors for guinea pigs
How this guide was put together: We have not tested these runs ourselves. We compared each one's listed dimensions, materials and features with published space and welfare guidance from the RSPCA, the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF), Wood Green, Blue Cross and the Royal Veterinary College. The dimensions come from the product listings, so check the live listing before you buy.
