A self-propelled mower drives itself forward — you steer rather than push. On anything above a few hundred square metres, on a slope, or on damp British grass that grows faster than you can keep up with, it turns a chore into a walk. These are the five self-propelled mowers we rate for UK lawns in 2026.

    Do you actually need self-propelled?

If your lawn is under about 250 m², flat, and you mow weekly, a push mower is lighter, cheaper and simpler. Self-propelled earns its money on larger lawns, on slopes, on rough or damp ground, and for anyone who finds shoving a heavy petrol mower uphill hard work. The drive system adds weight and cost, so there is no point paying for it on a pocket-handkerchief lawn.

    Front-wheel or rear-wheel drive?

Front-wheel drive is easier to manoeuvre — tip the handle down to lift the drive wheels and the mower pivots on the spot, which is ideal for lawns full of borders, trees and beds. Traction drops off on slopes and when the grass box fills.

Rear-wheel drive keeps its grip on inclines and with a full box, so it is the choice for sloped or larger lawns. It is less nimble around obstacles. All-wheel drive exists on premium models and is genuinely useful only on steep or very uneven ground.

Variable speed and other features worth having

    • Variable speed control lets you match walking pace to conditions instead of chasing the mower. Worth the premium.
    • Mulching returns clippings as fertiliser and saves emptying the box — best used on dry grass, little and often.
    • Cutting width of 41–46cm suits most UK gardens; 48cm and up saves passes on big lawns but is harder to steer around beds.
    • Steel deck lasts longer than plastic but is heavier and needs cleaning to avoid rust.
    • Single-lever height adjustment saves real time versus adjusting each wheel.

    Petrol or cordless?

Petrol self-propelled mowers still win on sustained power, wet grass and unlimited run time, and are the sensible pick above roughly 800 m². Cordless models have closed the gap for medium lawns: no fuel, no servicing, instant start and far less noise. Check the battery platform first — buying into a system you already own tools for saves a lot of money. For a cordless mower on a large lawn, budget for two batteries.

    Our Verdict

Which self-propelled mower should you buy?

For a typical UK garden of 250–800 m² with a few slopes and borders, a petrol rear-wheel-drive mower with a 41–46cm deck and variable speed is the reliable, well-priced answer and will last a decade with basic servicing.

If your lawn is flat and full of obstacles, front-wheel drive is easier to live with. If you are already invested in a cordless tool battery platform and your lawn is under about 800 m², a cordless self-propelled mower is now a genuinely good buy — quieter, cleaner and near maintenance free.

Above roughly 1,500 m², stop looking at walk-behind mowers altogether and price up a ride-on or a robot mower instead. Whatever you buy, sharpen the blade at least once a season: a blunt blade tears grass, browns the tips and makes even the best mower look poor.
