Power source
Cordless trimmers are the most popular for UK gardens — light, quiet and quick to start. Corded models are cheaper and never run flat but limit your reach. Petrol is best reserved for very long or thick hedges.
Blade length
Short blades (40–45cm) suit small ornamental hedges. 50–55cm is the sweet spot for most gardens. 60cm+ blades cover long runs faster but are heavier to hold.
Cutting capacity
Look at the tooth gap (mm). 18–22mm handles most garden hedges; 24mm+ is needed for thick, woody growth like overgrown privet or laurel.
