Rootstock & size
On apples and pears, the rootstock controls the final size. M27 / M9 for patio pots, M26 / MM106 for normal gardens, MM111 for orchards.
Self-fertile vs pollination partners
Self-fertile varieties (most cherries, raspberries, blueberries) crop alone. Many apples and pears need a pollination partner nearby.
Bare-root vs potted
Bare-root (Nov–March) is cheapest and establishes well. Potted plants can go in any time the ground isn't frozen.
Soil & site
Most soft fruit needs sun and free-draining soil. Blueberries are the exception — they need ericaceous (acidic) compost.
