Peat-free
Peat extraction destroys carbon-rich habitats. Modern peat-free mixes (coir, wood fibre, bark) now match or beat peat-based compost — and the UK ban is rolling out.
Multipurpose vs specialist
Multipurpose is fine for most pots and beds. Use ericaceous for blueberries / camellias, John Innes for long-term containers, seed compost for sowing.
Bag size & weight
Big 60–75L bags are cheaper per litre but heavy to handle. Compressed bales rehydrate to a much larger volume — great if storage is tight.
